The Brady Street Business Improvement District (BID #11, Milwaukee, WI) seeks qualified individuals looking to become the next full-time Executive Director.

About BID #11: Brady Street BID #11 is bounded by Prospect Avenue on the east, the Milwaukee River on the west, Pearson Street on the north, and Kewaunee on the south. BID #11 generally occupies Brady Street from 700 block to 1400 block and includes contiguous properties in 1600/1700 blocks of Cass, Marshall, Astor, Humboldt, Franklin, Arlington, Warren, and Farwell Avenue. Brady Street has been designated historically significant at both the local and Federal level.

The BID is governed by a board of directors made up of commercial property owners and business owners. They are appointed by Milwaukee’s mayor and confirmed by the Common Council. The board is responsible for submitting an annual operating plan, which includes the annual goals for the organization, budget, and proposed assessment formula that funds the BID’s activities. The BID is also responsible for annual financial reviews. The current annual operating budget is $181,000, which includes special assessments and fundraising.


General Function: Plan, organize, direct, manage, and coordinate the staff, programs, and activities of BID #11 to assure that objectives are attained, plans are fulfilled, and member needs are met. Recommend and participate in the formulation of new policies and makes decisions consistent with existing policies as they have been approved by the Board of Directors. Maintain effective relationships, both internally with the board of directors and the members and externally with the community. Responsible for economical, productive performance, forward-looking programming, and constructive growth of the Brady Street BID. Function as the main information source and advocate for Brady Street Merchants/property owners to ensure successful development opportunities and special events, with the ultimate goal of attracting new business and visitors to the Brady Street area.

Executive Director Required Functions

Administration/Accounting: Provide comprehensive, timely, and accurate administrative services, including but not limited to: accounting, board meeting notices/minutes, management, reporting, monthly reporting on activities, status and outcomes, phone and email/web inquiries, annual reporting to members, press inquiries, and other management duties as necessary.

As part of the administration services, the Executive Director evaluates and makes recommendations regarding the performance of any subcontractor hired by the BID. Currently, these include contracts for graffiti removal, litter maintenance, planter maintenance, holiday lighting, and event staff or interns as needed.

The BID director also facilitates monthly meetings and annual strategic planning workshops.

Marketing and Branding: Establish and drive the marketing goals of the BID in partnership with the BID Board. Effectively and efficiently communicate the BID’s value to members, customers, clients, users, and influencers. Coordinate e-newsletters, social media updates, and planned campaigns as well as website updates. Ensure all advertising and visual representations are consistent with the branding and priority messages of the BID. Propose and/or implement additional marketing strategies and tactics as appropriate.

Special Events: Manage all aspects of established events: the permissions, sponsorships, promotion, recruitment, and organization of volunteers plus the coordination of advertising, promotional materials, social media campaigns, website updates, and day-of operations. Assist the board in evaluating existing signature events and make recommendations for new or revamped current events to meet marketing and branding goals. Brady Street is extremely event driven.

Community Liaison: Networking and accessibility to the BID community at large is tantamount to success in this position. Be a strong advocate for neighborhood stakeholders, commercial property owners, and business owners. This includes being a liaison between the Brady Street Area Association, City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, and State of Wisconsin. This role also acts as the lead spokesperson for the District, so media relations are also important. The role also represents BID #11 on the Milwaukee BID Council.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in similar public-facing industry
  • Experience in marketing, event management, and financial management
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with ability to motivate and persuade others and make presentations to groups
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships with board of directors, city government, volunteers, community groups, and other agencies.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends for BID events and meetings
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, flexibility, and patience
  • Experience in similar-facing industry and/or nonprofit management a plus
  • Familiarity with BID Law, Open Meetings Law, and Robert’s Rules of Order a plus

Time Commitment and Budget: The Brady Street BID board of directors has determined that the budget for this full-time position is $55,000 – $70,000 annually and is negotiable based on experience.
